Discover more about Hōrin-ji

Hōrin-ji, also known as Kokuzo-san, is a Shingon Buddhist temple located on the hillside of Arashiyama Mountain. Founded around 713 AD, Hōrin-ji has a rich history, praised in ancient texts and supported by emperors and influential figures throughout the centuries. The temple's name, meaning 'temple of the Dharma Wheel', reflects its dedication to Buddhist teachings. Originally named Kadonoi-dera, Hōrin-ji was later given its current name by Emperor Seiwa in 874. The temple has faced destruction, including during the Onin War and the Kimon Incident, but has been rebuilt and restored, maintaining its spiritual significance. The temple is dedicated to Ākāśagarbha (Kokūzō), the bodhisattva of boundless space, revered as the provider of wisdom, happiness, and prosperity. Visitors can explore the temple's grounds, admiring the traditional Japanese architecture, lush greenery, and meticulously maintained gardens. A two-storied pagoda and an observation deck called the “Butai (stage)” offer panoramic views of the Togetsukyo Bridge, the Sagano area, Kyoto, and the Higashiyama mountain range. Hōrin-ji is also known for the Jusan Mairi ceremony, a coming-of-age tradition for thirteen-year-old children who visit to pray for wisdom and a fulfilling life.
