Discover more about Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art

The Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, formerly known as the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, stands as a testament to Kyoto's evolving artistic landscape. Founded in 1933 as the Kyoto Enthronement Memorial Museum of Art, it commemorated Emperor Showa's coronation and was made possible through the generous contributions of local citizens. Renamed after World War II, and again in 2020 when Kyocera Corporation acquired naming rights, the museum has been appreciated for over 85 years as Japan's oldest public art museum housed in its original architecture. The museum's architecture is a captivating blend of Japanese and Western design, known as the Imperial Crown Style. A comprehensive renovation completed in 2020 introduced modern elements while preserving the original structure. The renewal project, led by architects Aoki Jun and Nishizawa Tezzo, added the Higashiyama Cube Hall, a glass roof over the inner garden, and an underground complex with a cafeteria, museum shop, and gallery. The museum's collection comprises approximately 4,200 works from the Meiji era to the present, including Japanese and Western paintings, sculptures, prints, crafts, and calligraphy. It emphasizes modern Kyoto art, featuring nihonga (Japanese-style paintings) from the Meiji and Showa periods. The Collection Room displays permanent exhibits in seasonal rotation. The museum hosts various special exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing famous Japanese artists and art movements. Located in Okazaki Park in Sakyo-ku, the museum is surrounded by natural beauty and other cultural attractions such as Heian Shrine and the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.
