Discover more about The Narrows

The Narrows is Zion National Park's signature hike, a unique experience that immerses you in the Virgin River as you trek through a slot canyon sculpted over millennia. Towering walls of Navajo sandstone, sometimes only twenty to thirty feet apart, soar a thousand feet above, creating a cathedral of natural beauty. The most popular way to experience The Narrows is the 'bottom-up' hike from the Temple of Sinawava. This route doesn't require a permit for hikes up to Big Spring, a strenuous 10-mile round trip. However, you can customize the length of your hike, turning back whenever you wish. Be prepared to get wet, as much of the trail involves wading through the Virgin River. For a more challenging adventure, consider the 16-mile 'top-down' hike from Chamberlain's Ranch, which requires a permit. This full-day or overnight backpacking trip takes you through the entire Narrows, showcasing its most remote and stunning sections. Regardless of your chosen route, check conditions before you go. The National Park Service closes The Narrows when the river flow exceeds 150 cubic feet per second or during flash flood warnings. Summer and early fall are the most popular times to hike when the water is warmer and the weather is generally more stable.
