Getting There

  • Shuttle

    To reach the W Rim Trailhead near Lava Point, take a shuttle from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. Several companies, like Red Rock Shuttle and Zion Adventure Company, offer this service. A one-way shuttle can cost around $40 per person. Book in advance, as seats are limited.

  • Driving

    From the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, drive west on Utah Highway 9 for 13.3 miles. Turn right onto Kolob Terrace Road and continue for 20.3 miles. Turn right onto Lava Point Road, veering left at mile 0.9 and right again. Continue straight for 1.4 miles to the trailhead. Note that access to Lava Point may be blocked by snow in winter.

The W Rim Trail, located in Utah, is a remarkable hiking experience within Zion National Park, offering stunning views and a diverse range of natural landscapes. This point-to-point trail stretches 14.5 miles between Lava Point TH on Wildcat Canyon Rd and the Grotto TH in Zion Canyon. Hiking the entire West Rim Trail in one day is possible, starting from Lava Point TH and hiking down to the Grotto, known as "top down". The trail offers views of Phantom Valley and the canyons to the south. The West Rim Trail traverses multiple ecosystems, highlighting the ecological diversity within the park. The trail passes close to the western rim of Horse Pasture Plateau, providing unobstructed views across the Right Fork to Navajo sandstone peaks like Ivins Mountain and the Inclined Temple. From Cabin Spring, hikers descend switchbacks on the south face of the plateau into Little Siberia, with Mount Majestic on the right. The trail balances across the rim of Zion Canyon, leading to Scout Overlook. The West Rim Trail offers views of the Virgin River and the canyon.
