Discover more about Black Rock

Black Rock, known locally as Tuoro, is more than just a scenic attraction; it's a place where the natural beauty of Rarotonga intertwines with deep cultural significance. Located on the island's northwestern coast, close to Avarua, it's easily accessible and offers a unique experience for every visitor. The dramatic landscape is defined by its black volcanic rock formations that rise majestically from the turquoise waters of the Pacific. These rocks, estimated to be 1.9 million years old, aren't just visually stunning; they hold a special place in Cook Islands' history. In Neolithic times, the Maori people of Rarotonga used this area as a quarry, crafting stone tools and other implements from the basalt. According to ancient beliefs, Tuoro is the departure point for spirits leaving Rarotonga. The spirits would ascend a pua tree and leap from it to begin their journey to Avaiki, their ancient homeland in the west. This connection to the afterlife adds a layer of mystique to the site, inviting contemplation and reflection. Today, Black Rock is a popular destination for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. The clear waters teem with vibrant marine life, making it an ideal spot for underwater exploration. As the sun sets, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors, providing a breathtaking backdrop for photographers and romantics alike.
