Rarotonga is easily accessible via its main road, Ara Tapu, which circles the island. From anywhere on the island, you can catch either the clockwise or anti-clockwise bus. These buses operate frequently from Monday to Saturday, with limited service on Sundays. A single ride costs NZ$5, or you can purchase a round trip for NZ$8. Simply wave down the bus along the main road. Note that buses accept NZD, but may also accept USD, AUD, and EURO notes at a dollar-for-dollar rate.

Taxi fares start at NZ$3 per kilometer, with a minimum day fare of NZ$10 and a minimum night fare of NZ$15. A taxi from the airport to Avarua is approximately NZ$15 per person.
