Discover more about Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park

Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park, a relatively new park established in 2015, encompasses 39,772 hectares of mountains and highlands. It's a region of striking contrasts, where active volcanoes meet tranquil lakes, and ancient Shinto shrines nestle in deep forests. The park is easily accessible from Nagano City, making it a convenient escape into nature. The park's geological diversity is a major draw. Mount Myoko and Mount Yake are active volcanoes, while the Togakushi Range was formed by an undersea volcano. Lake Nojiri was created by lava flow from Mount Kurohime. This varied terrain supports diverse ecosystems, from grassy pastures to dense forests of beech and birch. Historically, the park is significant for its tradition of Shugendo, a form of mountain worship blending Buddhism, Taoism, and Shinto. The shrines of Mount Togakushi, including the famed Okusha (Upper Shrine) with its cedar-lined approach, are testaments to this ancient practice. Outdoor activities abound. Winter brings heavy snowfall, making it a haven for skiers and snowboarders. Popular ski resorts include Myoko Kogen, known for its deep powder. In warmer months, hiking trails beckon, including the Togakushi Kodo, an ancient pilgrimage route connecting the shrines. Visitors can also enjoy kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Nojiri. The park is also home to diverse wildlife, including black bears and the rock ptarmigan, a designated Natural Monument. Birdwatching is popular, especially in the Togakushi Forest Botanical Garden. Whether you seek spiritual solace, outdoor adventure, or simply a connection with nature, Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
