History of Reading

Founding and Early Years

Reading, Pennsylvania was established in 1748 by the sons of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. Named after Reading, Berkshire in England, the town quickly became a center for trade and industry due to its strategic location along the Schuylkill River and its proximity to Philadelphia.

The Reading Railroad
