    From the center of New Castle, Great Island Common is easily accessible by foot. Follow Wentworth Road eastward; the park entrance will be on your left. The walk offers scenic views of the coastline. No costs involved.

  • Driving

    Approaching Great Island Common by car, follow Route 1B (Wentworth Road) into New Castle. The park is located at 301 Wentworth Road. Note that there is a parking fee when an attendant is present, starting May 17, 2025. Parking fees vary. Limited VIP parking is sometimes available during special events.

  • Public Transport

    While New Castle is a small island town, public transportation options are limited. The New Castle Area Transit Authority (NCATA) primarily serves the local residents. From Portsmouth, you can take a taxi or ride-sharing service to reach Great Island Common. A taxi from downtown Portsmouth would cost approximately $20-$30.

Great Island Common, located in New Castle, New Hampshire, is a 32-acre seaside park offering a variety of recreational activities and stunning views. This town-owned park features a small sandy beach, a rocky shoreline, and a stone jetty popular for fishing. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, shell and rock hunting, and kite flying in the spacious park areas. The Common is open to the public from 9 AM to 9 PM daily. It provides sweeping views of Whaleback and Portsmouth Harbor Light, as well as Fort Constitution, Fort McClary, and Fort Foster. The park's history is rich, with the U.S. Army acquiring the land in 1909 to house soldiers and anti-aircraft guns. In 1963, the remainder of the Naval Annex was transferred to the town for park and recreation use. Great Island Common is also home to a memorial dedicated to the citizens of New Castle lost at sea, marked by a marble obelisk. The park is a popular venue for weddings and family functions, offering a picturesque and relaxing atmosphere. While dogs are only allowed during the off-season, the park remains a refreshing destination with well-maintained grounds and waterfront views.
