Discover more about Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse

The Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, also known as Fort Point Lighthouse, New Castle Lighthouse, and Fort Constitution Lighthouse, stands as a sentinel at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor. Its story began in 1771, making it one of the first lighthouses in the American colonies. The original wooden tower witnessed the events leading up to the American Revolution when colonists raided Fort William and Mary for supplies. Over the centuries, the lighthouse has been rebuilt and renovated. The current cast-iron tower dates back to 1878 and is set within the walls of Fort Constitution. The lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding ships through the Piscataqua River's treacherous currents. Today, the light emits a fixed green signal, visible for 12 nautical miles. Visitors can explore the grounds of Fort Constitution and admire the lighthouse. During the summer, the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses offer tours of the tower, providing a chance to climb to the top and enjoy panoramic views. The site offers a unique blend of maritime history and military heritage. Please note that due to storm damage, tours are suspended for the summer of 2024.
