Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library: A Kennebunkport Landmark

The Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library stands as a beloved landmark in Kennebunkport, Maine. Its story began in 1813 when the Kennebunk Bank of Arundel constructed the red brick building on Maine Street. In 1831, the U.S. Government purchased the building to serve as a Custom House, reflecting Kennebunkport's growing importance as a shipbuilding center. For many years, the building served as the Kennebunk Customs House, witnessing the maritime activities that shaped the town. In 1898, the Kennebunkport Free Library, founded by Mrs. Anne Talbot, moved to the second floor. In 1916, the Kennebunkport Public Library Association was formed, absorbing Mrs. Talbot's library. In 1920, Mr. and Mrs. Abbott Graves purchased the property and, in 1921, deeded it to the Library Association, with the stipulation that it be named in memory of their son, Louis T. Graves. Today, the library continues to serve as a cultural and intellectual hub, offering a diverse collection of books, multimedia resources, and programs for all ages. Visitors can admire historical artifacts and artwork, including paintings by Abbott Graves and models of ships built on the Kennebunk River. The library also houses the original bank vault, a reminder of the building's early days. The library's mission is to provide free access to knowledge and lifelong learning, collaborating with the community to meet its needs for education, information, recreation, and communication.
