Peirce Island: A Waterfront Escape in Portsmouth

Peirce Island, a 27-acre island owned by the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a treasure trove of history and natural beauty. Situated where the Piscataqua River meets the South End of Portsmouth, the island offers stunning views of salt marshes, tidal pools, rocky cliffs, and meadows. Historically, Peirce Island played a vital role in the defense of Portsmouth Harbor. In 1775, Fort Washington was constructed on the island to protect the Piscataqua River. While a wastewater treatment plant occupies a portion of the island, the remaining areas are well-maintained and offer scenic trails and waterfront overlooks.
