Getting There

  • Public Transportation

    If you are starting from Kyoto, take the JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station to Nara Station. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes. Upon arrival at Nara Station, exit the station and transfer to the Nara Kotsu Bus. Board the bus bound for 'Daibutsuden' (Great Buddha Hall) or 'Todai-ji Daibutsuden'. The bus ride will take about 10 minutes, and the fare is around 210 yen. Get off at 'Daibutsuden' bus stop, and you will see the Todai-ji Namdaimon (Grand South Gate) entrance a short walk away.

  • Car

    If you are driving from Osaka, take the Hanshin Expressway to the Nishi-Meihan Expressway. Exit at the Nara IC and follow the signs towards Nara Park. The distance is approximately 45 km and will take about 1 hour depending on traffic. Once in Nara, there are several parking areas available near Nara Park where you can park your car, such as the Nara Park Visitor Center parking. From the parking area, it is a 10-15 minute walk to Todai-ji Namdaimon (Grand South Gate). Be aware that parking fees may apply, typically around 500 yen per hour.

  • Public Transportation

    For those coming from Osaka, you can also take the Kintetsu Limited Express from Osaka Namba Station to Kintetsu Nara Station. This train is faster and takes about 40 minutes. After arriving at Kintetsu Nara Station, exit the station and walk towards Nara Park. It is about a 20-minute walk to Todai-ji Namdaimon (Grand South Gate). This option costs around 1,130 yen for a one-way ticket.
