History of Jersey City

Jersey City, originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, saw its first European settlers in the early 1600s. Dutch fur traders established a settlement called Pavonia in 1630. On August 19, 1779, during the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Paulus Hook occurred.
