Ax-les-Thermes, a picturesque town in the Ariège department of the French Pyrenees, has been a renowned spa destination for centuries. Situated at an altitude of 720 meters, the town is surrounded by lush forests and towering peaks, offering visitors a tranquil escape. The town's history is deeply intertwined with its thermal waters. The Romans first recognized the therapeutic properties of the springs, and in the Middle Ages, they were used to treat skin diseases, particularly among soldiers. In 1241, the Count of Foix, Roger 9th, established a leper hospital and the Bassin des Ladres, further solidifying the town's reputation as a healing center. The arrival of the transpyrenean railway in the 19th century opened the valley to a wider audience, leading to modernization and the construction of thermal establishments, luxury villas, and hotels. Today, Ax-les-Thermes boasts over sixty hot water sources, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 78°C. The town has three developed spa centers: Couloubret, Le Teich, and Le Modèle, offering a range of treatments for rheumatism and respiratory difficulties. Visitors can also soak their feet in the open-air Bassin des Ladres, a historic pool in the town square. Les Bains du Couloubret offers a modern spa experience with thermal baths, saunas, and jacuzzis in a Roman-inspired setting. Beyond its thermal baths, Ax-les-Thermes offers a variety of activities. In winter, the Ax 3 Domaines ski resort provides over 70 kilometers of pistes for skiers and snowboarders. During the summer, the surrounding mountains and valleys are ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring scenic lakes and waterfalls. The Natural Reserve of the Orlu valley and the Grotte de Lombrives are highly recommended for nature enthusiasts. The town itself features a casino, theater, and numerous parks, providing ample leisure opportunities.
