Puigmal: Peak of the Pyrenees
Conquer Puigmal, one of the Pyrenees' highest peaks, for breathtaking panoramic views of Spain and France. A rewarding hike for outdoor enthusiasts.
Puigmal, crowned as one of the highest peaks in the eastern Pyrenees, offers a rewarding experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Its strategic location on the Spanish-French border grants visitors breathtaking 360-degree views of both the Spanish and French Pyrenees. The mountain's name, Puigmal d'Err, reflects its presence within the municipality of Queralbs and the commune of Err. The mountain's geology contributes to its diverse terrain. The western side, characterized by friable metasediments (schists), presents smooth slopes ideal for easy walking. In contrast, the eastern side features tougher gneiss, creating a spiky alpine landscape with sharp crests. While the ascent is generally considered non-technical, the physical demands of the hike should not be underestimated. Several trails lead to the summit, with varying levels of difficulty and duration. The classic approach from Vall de Núria is particularly popular, offering stunning scenery along the way. Regardless of the chosen route, hikers are advised to check weather conditions and be adequately equipped for high mountain terrain.
