Discover more about Kamogawa Delta

Kamogawa Delta, also known as Kamo River Delta, marks the beginning of the iconic Kamo River in Kyoto. This triangular-shaped area is where the Kamo River, flowing from the west, converges with the Takano River, which flows from the east. The delta has become a cherished open space for locals and tourists alike, offering a peaceful retreat. Historically, the Kamo River has been integral to Kyoto's culture since the Heian period, serving as a vital water source and a scenic locale for aristocratic pastimes. Today, Kamogawa Delta provides a space for relaxation, reflection, and recreation. One of the delta's most distinctive features is the collection of stepping stones (tobi-ishi) that allow people to cross the river. Some stones are shaped like turtles and birds, adding a playful touch to the experience. The delta is also known for rock sculptures created by artist Ikenishi Daisuke. The area is particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season and autumn. Kamogawa Delta is near Shimogamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
