Shoju-in Temple, also known as Furin-ji (Wind Chime Temple), is a captivating destination located in Ujitawara, a town southeast of Kyoto renowned for its high-quality green tea. Founded approximately 800 years ago, this temple belongs to the Koyasan Shingon sect of Buddhism. Throughout its history, Shoju-in has been rebuilt after fires and now stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of Japanese temple architecture. The temple's main attractions include the heart-shaped Inome window, a traditional Japanese design believed to bring happiness and ward off evil. This window frames picturesque views of the surrounding gardens, with cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and serene snowscapes in winter. The side hall's ceiling is adorned with 160 paintings of flowers and Japanese landscapes, adding to the temple's artistic charm. During summer, Shoju-in hosts the Wind Chime Festival, where over 2,000 wind chimes decorate the temple grounds. The festival creates a soothing atmosphere with the gentle sounds of the chimes blending with the natural surroundings. Visitors can also participate in activities such as painting their own wind chimes. Ujitawara itself is known as the birthplace of Japanese green tea, with tea plantations dotting the landscape.
